Donald asks…

Is the best way to get financing to make a BIG budget film is to create a successful low budget film?

Someone said to me that if I want to direct a 200 million dollar feature film ,i first need to have many successful low budgets and medium budgets before I get my big break… is that true?

Justin answers:

If you can make an amazing low budget movie and get it shown and win awards at film festivals that would be a good way to get noticed and perhaps get funding for future projects.

Learn from the masters. Look into some of the great writers/directors/movie makers on IMDb and Wikipedia and see their progression and histories, like M. Night Shyamalan, James Cameron, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Quentin Tarantino, J.J. Abrams etc.

3D animation and special effects are getting better and better, and people have much easier access to the professional tools nowadays (though a lot of it is very skilled work and time consuming). There are also softwares like MovieStorm that allow you to easily create a 3D animation movie. So if you need funding for a live action movie you could create it first as a 3D animation movie, trailer or storyboard to let people see your idea and how you envision it.

What were 1950’s Film Financing parties called?

Hey, did you ever see Ed Wood? at some point in the film that have a little cocktail party and dinner and invite a ton of investors to meet the actors and director and crew and such.

They apperantly were pretty popular in the 50’s for getting financing for films. What were they called? Any specific name? I’m think Gala or something.

Anyone?

Justin answers:

If these events actually took place, I’m sure they were called fundraisers as that is what they were trying to do. It would not fit under the definition of gala.

A question about film financing?

Hypothetical question: Let’s say I have a film script that several actors are interested in, and several scenes shot with stand in actors would that be enough to get funding for a film project?

Justin answers:

That is more than some movies get. Also it would depend on the project and where you were looking for funding. There are investors out there who just invest in independent films. If you want to take it to a studio they may want to have their pick of actors. But financing, especially at a low budget level is one of the easiest parts of film making. Making that money back, at the independent level is the hard part.
